Historical Background
In the ancient world, light was limited and very valuable -
Homes were lit by small oil lamps, often placed on a stand to maximize light.
There was no electricity, so even a small flame made a significant difference.
Cities built on hills (like Jerusalem) could be seen from great distances, especially at night.
Covering a lamp with a basket would immediately extinguish or hide its usefulness.
Jesus uses these everyday images to teach a powerful spiritual truth: light is meant to be seen.
Proposition - True believers must shine the light of Christ in a dark world.

1. Our Identity — We Are the Light of the World
Jesus does not say “you should be light,” but “you are the light.”
This light is not our own—it is a reflection of Christ.
John 8:12 — Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world”
Philippians 2:15 — “shine as lights in the world”
Ephesians 5:8 — “you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord”
Biblical Truth:
Believers reflect the light of Christ to a world in spiritual darkness.
John 3:19 — men loved darkness rather than light
2 Corinthians 4:4 — the god of this world has blinded minds
Illustration:
The moon has no light of its own—it reflects the sun. In the same way, Christians do not produce spiritual light; they reflect Christ.
Application:
Stay close to Christ to reflect His light clearly
Remember your identity is rooted in Him, not yourself
2. Our Visibility — Light Is Meant to Be Seen
“A city set on a hill cannot be hidden…”
Light is not designed to be concealed.
Luke 11:33 — no one lights a lamp and hides it
1 Peter 2:9 — “proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness”
Biblical Truth:
A genuine Christian life will be visible.
Illustration:
In a completely dark room, even the smallest light is immediately noticeable. You don’t have to announce it—it simply shines.
Application:
Do not hide your faith
Be unashamed of Christ (Romans 1:16)
Live openly as a follower of Jesus
3. Our Influence — Light Guides and Reveals Truth
Light does more than shine—it guides and reveals.
Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp to my feet”
John 1:5 — “The Light shines in the darkness”
Ephesians 5:11 — expose the deeds of darkness
Biblical Truth:
Believers help others see truth by pointing them to God’s Word.
Illustration:
A flashlight on a dark path keeps you from stumbling. Without it, danger is everywhere. In the same way, God uses believers to point others to truth and keep them from spiritual harm.
Application:
Share God’s Word clearly
Help others see truth through your life and words
Stand for righteousness even when it exposes sin
4. Our Purpose — Glorify God Through Good Works
“Let your light shine… so that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father…”
The goal is not attention for ourselves—but glory for God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 — do all to the glory of God
Titus 2:7–8 — show yourself as an example of good deeds
1 Peter 2:12 — good deeds lead others to glorify God
Biblical Truth:
Our lives should point people to God, not to ourselves.
Illustration:
A lighthouse does not draw attention to itself—it directs ships safely to shore. Its purpose is to guide, not to be admired.
Application:
Serve others with humility
Do good works with the right motive
Make sure your life points people to God
5. The Warning — Do Not Hide the Light
“Nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket…”
Hiding the light makes it useless.
Biblical Truth:
Fear, compromise, or sin can dim or conceal our testimony.
Mark 8:38 — warning against being ashamed of Christ
2 Timothy 1:7–8 — do not shrink back in fear
Illustration:
Putting a cover over a lamp doesn’t just hide the light—it eventually puts it out. In the same way, hiding your faith will weaken your effectiveness.
Application:
Remove anything that dims your testimony
Boldly live for Christ
Refuse to blend into the darkness
Conclusion
Jesus declares:
You are light
Light is visible
Light has a purpose
The world is dark—but that is exactly why light is needed.
Final Challenge
Ask yourself:
Is my life clearly reflecting Christ?
Can others see a difference?
Am I pointing people to God or to myself?
A single light can pierce great darkness.
God has placed you exactly where you are to shine.

The Sermon on the Mount: (Matthew 5–7): An Expositional Commentary “You Are the Light”
One of the greatest illustrations on this point that I have heard was often used by Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse. He used to say that when Christ was in the world he was a bit like the sun which is here by day and gone at night. But when the sun goes down the moon comes up, and the moon is a picture of the church—of Christians. It shines, but it does not shine by its own light. It shines only because it reflects the light of the sun. Jesus said of himself in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” But when he was thinking of the fact that one day he would be taken out of the world he said, “You are the light of the world.” And that is why the world is in such darkness today. At times the church is a full moon, in the midst of revival when a man like Luther or Calvin or Wesley is here. And at other times the church is a new moon and you can barely see it. But whether it is a full moon or a new moon or only a waxing or a waning quarter it glows because of the sun. In the same way, you and I can show forth light only if we reflect the real light of the Lord Jesus.
